Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) – Miami-Dade County

The CIT program is a community-based initiative that bridges the gap between law enforcement and the behavioral health system. Through strong partnerships and collaboration, CIT promotes systemic change that improves public safety, reduces unnecessary incarceration, and helps redirect individuals with mental illnesses and substance use disorders from the criminal justice system to appropriate health care services.

What is a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Officer?

CIT Officers complete 40 hours of specialized training designed to:

  • Build understanding of mental illnesses and substance use disorders
  • Improve communication skills for working with people in crisis
  • Teach crisis de-escalation strategies
  • Increase knowledge of local behavioral health resources to support individuals and families

This training equips officers to respond more effectively, safely, and compassionately when assisting individuals experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis.
